Default How do you govern multiple planets?

If we were to travel to other planets or moons, how would we govern them. Would someone rule the whole place? Would we make new countries on this planet, or would there be extensions of the current countries on the other planet(s)?

I thinking there would be a treaty signed by ever country that no one owns the Moon and there are no territorial claims. It can be administered by the UN.

Until the people living on the moon or another planet want free of UN rule and break away. Its happened throughout history and just because we are expanding into space doesn't mean it would stop.

It would be very dangerous to have a conflict off-earth.

If we have managed to bridge the gap between stars, we should just let the colony make their own government. They would be years and years away and contact would also take years and years, so it would be really hard to establish a communication system (unless it was faster than light). They would have to set up their own government/UN. They could make whatever countries they want and that planet would be like a second Earth.

It would happen though. Its Human nature to fight. Just because we are able to live on the Moon/Mars doesn't mean that'll go away. Who knows maybe the people that live on Mars will attack Earth for whatever reason.

I agree though, If man ever left Earth and colonized another planet, moon we would still have wars and conflicts.

Yes, survival of the fittest. Whichever colonized planet and its people are the strongest will survive. Human nature is to survive like you said, and as humans on Mars evolve differently that humans on Earth, we might be facing a war not unlike the prehistoric one fought between us and the Neanderthals. The only difference would be that this war could decimate both civilizations, and end the human race.

It will be more like "survival of the guys with the most money"

i think that by that time if humans can go to a habitable planet then the human race would have most likely bonded or destroyed each other until the last nation standing will probably bond all the nations until we have one galactic united that will bind all the planets and moons together and hopefully there would be peace until we find another sentient species.
