Russian bombers have stepped up provocative flight exercises all the around the world. The latest being in Japan where the Japanese air force had to send jets to intercept the bombers. Why are the Russians doing this? What do they have to gain from these flights?

Six Japanese jets scrambled Oct. 8 as two Russian military planes came close to Japanese airspace, a defense ministry official said.

The two Russian planes flew close to Japanese airspace over the Sea of Japan from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., a defense ministry official told AFP, confirming Russian media reports.

Russia is just trying to scare nations again to reform their lost sphere of influence. It will be interesting to see what China thinks of this.

I agree. China may see these as a threat and they have a long standing border dispute. Russia may want to be careful with how they are trying to reinsert itself.
